Residence Studio was engaged by the Maleny Residence clients to provide interior furnishings and FFE finishes to work back with the existing architecture by renowned Architect, Stuart Rattle. The clients wanted a weekender home away from home, a country escape to the rolling hills of Maleny. This is a multi-stage project, the first stage is to bring a fresh energy to the classic design, lifting the central living areas and kitchen and Stage 2 will be to extend, with a focus on the external entertaining and pool area and extending the internal floor space.
The existing grand architectural features were already in the country home but it required a considered contemporary cosmetic renovation to bring it back to its natural beauty.
The original sandstone flooring in the entry was one of the key features that was kept as a nod to the original design together. The addition of the Phillip Jeffries Borderline striped wallpaper gave the impression of panelling referencing the country style look, the natural linen colouring in the wallpaper was brought in to provide a warm, homely feeling as soon as you enter the home.
More traditional finishing details such as brass castors to the custom rolled arm sofa and brass stud details to the Zuster custom-made side table to the living room still feel contemporary but sympathetic to the home’s heritage.
The Persian knotted rugs to the living spaces are made from pure wool and hand spun silk, this elevates the furnishings and adds a luxurious element to the room.
The blend of traditional finishes such as rattan, timbers, linen were mixed with more contemporary finishes such as stippled shagreen texture, sustainable rope, herringbone, checkered and striped fabrics to ensure the focus link to the original heritage but have a feeling of being completely refreshed and luxurious.
The custom European fabrics and piping to the cushions and furniture pieces were selected with an American Ralph Lauren feel in mind while still having a heritage feel. Duck egg blues, navy and light blue stripes were paired with chocolates, khaki greens and rustic tan leathers.
Over 150 vintage encyclopaedias and antique accessories were sourced for the entry shelving and were paired with more contemporary furnishings such as coral bookends, Cire Trudon candles, colourful coffee table books and sculptural pieces.
The central hall table provides a landing for colourful books, structured greenery and custom Australian made artisanal pieces while still focusing on the sun-dappled countryside view.
One of the key design elements of the original sandstone was also retained to the sunroom that overlooks the stunning view. Residence Studio were conscious to keep these original key elements and incorporate these as part of the new contemporary feel.
The custom 9 metre Armadillo runner to the sunroom ties together all of the living spaces that sit off this area while the furniture was selected with a indoor/outdoor feel in mind so it feels like an extension of the outdoor entertaining area. The rattan bar cart adds a little bit of a vintage and timeless feel while also providing easy access for a sneaky afternoon cocktail in the sunshine.
