Designer's Hotel Guide: Il Borro, Tuscany
Designer’s Hotel Guide: Il Borro, Tuscany
We are always on the hunt for the best stays overseas that are our “design aesthetic” and our lists are constantly getting longer. In 2023 we stayed at some beautiful hotels while in Italy and with lots of questions asked about where we stayed, we have put together our itinerary over a couple of blog posts so you too can visit.
We believe that these are some of the best Italian hotels ever! Take a look at our top tips on things to do at Il Borro, Toscana.
THE ROOM
Spacious would be the first word when describing the hotel and the rooms. Very large, homely rooms with terracotta flooring throughout which is softened by the citrus, soft greens and linen palette. Beautiful warm lighting and very considered design elements.
We stayed in the I Borrigiani farmhouse of the estate and utilised the door to door driver service when visiting parts of Il Borro. You can select from many different styles of rooms from the medieval historical town to the countryside or even the vineyards.
The farmhouses are really unique and completely surrounded by greenery. Right at the door is a infinity edge pool and bar making it the perfect distance to get a quick aperitif prior to dinner.
THE ESTATE
“In 1993, Il Borro became property of the Ferragamo family who had fallen in love with the wild nature of the area and the history of the estate. Respect for the traditions and the history of the place guided the family as they began major renovations and restoration of the hamlet and the villas.”
Covering more than 1100 organic hectares in Tuscany, Il Borro really does have everything at it’s fingertips. Beehives, winery and organic farm are just some of the things you can take a look at, however their organic and sustainability commitments together with seasonal cooking really set them apart from other hotels.
This full circle agriculture mentality shows their company philosophy and respect for the environment, they use renewable energy sources which result in zero carbon emissions.
THE FOOD & DRINKS
Our pick of the food was the buffet breakfast, we collectively agreed that this was one of the best buffet’s of the trip.
Il Borro utilises the produce from the estate, including the meat, eggs, cheese, vegetables and olive oil.
We recommend an aperitif and snacks at the Borro Bar prior to dinner at the Tuscan Bistro.
WINE TOUR: Il BORRO
It’s no secret that we love a wine tour and where else to do it but in the heart of Tuscany? Il Borro provide a selection of interesting tours of their large underground wine cellar showcasing their different winemaking techniques.
5 types of wines (Bolle di Borro, Borrorosa, Petruna, Polissena, Vinsanto) are accompanied by snacks and their own olive oil - our favourite!
FARM TOUR & OSTERIA DELL’OCA SATOLLA RESTAURANT - IL BORRO
An extended tour around the farm and vineyards with lunch at a beautiful Osteria Dell’oca Satolla on the estate. One of the best experiences of our trip!
