Designer’s Hotel Guide: Borgo Pignano, Tuscany

We are always on the hunt for the best stays overseas and our lists are constantly getting longer. Earlier this year we stayed at some amazing hotels while in Italy, with lots of questions asked about where we stayed we have put together our itinerary over a couple of blog posts so you too can visit.

We believe that these are some of the best Italian hotels ever! Take a look at our top tips on things to do at Borgo Pignano, Tuscany.

THE ROOMS

Overlooking the main garden area and panoramic pool, the sophisticated rooms were adorned with considered antiques, Italian fabrics and artefacts. The soft colouring of the rooms, the beautiful stencilling on the walls and soft linen curtains is a nod back to it’s history and really added to the ethereal feel of the property.

In addition to the rooms in the main building, Borgo Pignano have a multitude of other accomodations available to suit larger families such as the 6 villas which come with a private heated swimming pool or 10 Maisonettes which feature a kitchen and comfortable living area.

THE ESTATE

Located on a peaceful hilltop, Borgo Pignano is one of the most charming hotels you will visit in the Italian countryside. Located near Volterra and San Gimignano, in the province of Pisa and with over 750 acres of secluded fields, woods and gardens, it really feels like you have stepped into another world.

The main building is an 18th Century villa surrounded by English gardens, you have the option to stay in the villa itself or in one of the 10 maisonettes and cottages which are located around the property.

One of the most picturesque views in in the main garden overlooking the stunning panoramic pool. The view from the pool overlooks the rolling green hills and is

The estate is home to many vegetable gardens, orchards, olive groves and vineyards and with their luxury-eco ethos they incorporate all of their produce into the cooking, wine making, olive oils and beauty products.

THE FOOD & DRINKS

The breakfast was set in one of the lovely lounge rooms with produce collected from the nearby town or from the land, the hot and cold sections were delicious! Villa Pignano is the Michelin Green Star restaurant located in the dining room and serves a contemporary interpretation of Italian dishes.

Borgo Pignano utilises all of the produce from the estate, including the grains and cereals to make bread and pastas, organic food, honey and preserves, cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and red, white, rose and sparkling varietals all made on the property.

Everyday in the main garden bar, an afternoon aperitif is served. Enjoy it sitting in the garden or overlooking a beautiful view!

THE INTERIORS

One of our favourite hotel interiors from our trip, the selections were considered and in keeping with the history of the property. Almost every room has a painting or drawing made by artists with a connection to Tuscany or Borgo Pignano itself.

All renovations have been performed using locally sourced materials such as stone, slate, organic plasters and eco paints.

Everywhere you turn is another beautiful detail, another antique piece of furniture or painting, there is always something beautiful to look at.

FARM TOUR

An extended tour around the farm and vineyards was our highlight of our time there!

We highly recommend doing the tour to have an appreciation of all the moving parts of this beautiful hotel. From the use of crops on the land in the restaurant and hotel to the other guest houses that are renovated to reflect the same look and feel in the main hotel.

We loved our stay here and can’t wait to come back. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions!
